Your dentures should rest snugly but comfortably against your gums. They should be secure enough that they remain sturdy anytime you eat, speak, or smile. But what if your lower denture keeps slipping out of place? That can be a frustrating, embarrassing, and uncomfortable issue. Continue reading below to learn why this problem can arise and what you may be able to do to find a solution.

Why Does Your Lower Denture Keep Slipping?

In most cases, a denture slips out of place due to an improper fit. There are several possible explanations for a poor fit, including:

  • Changes to your jawbone. After the natural teeth are removed or fall out, a process known as resorption begins. Essentially, because your jawbone is no longer stimulated by your natural tooth roots, your body is gradually recycling its raw materials. This can cause the jawbone to become significantly smaller over time.
  • Damage to your denture. Dentures can easily become warped if they are exposed to extremely hot temperatures, or they can break if they are dropped on a hard surface.
  • Low-quality dentures. Some patients purchase the lowest-priced dentures they can find. Unfortunately, they often end up with a prosthetic that does not fit exactly as it should.

Of course, even if your denture fits well, it might still occasionally slip out of its place, especially if it is new. Once you get used to it, though, it should stay securely where it belongs.

What Can You Do About a Slipping Lower Denture?

There are a few possible solutions for a slipping lower denture:

  • Talk to your dentist about a reline. During a reline, your dentist can adjust your denture by adding extra material to its base.
  • Use adhesive. For many people, natural suction is sufficient to keep their denture in place. For some individuals, though, a dab of denture adhesive is necessary.
  • Consider getting a new denture. If your dentures are badly damaged or of low quality, you might need an entirely new prosthetic.
  • Switch to implant dentures. Implant dentures are anchored in the mouth by prosthetic tooth roots. They have virtually no risk of slipping out of place!

You should not have to deal with the discomfort and inconvenience of a slipping lower denture. Hopefully, applying the suggestions in this article will help your teeth stay where they belong.
